We should do *something* to get this group more active. Not sure what though ๐Ÿ˜›
Now that we have 20+ people here, I wonder if we start something more than just this.

Has anyone used Rosetta Stone (software)? Any opinion?

My family is asking me how it is… I heard a lot of good things about it.

If it works, I want to try to learn another language with it too.

What’s your favorite tool for learning English? Or web sites (blogs), books, podcasts…?

Also, you can check the others diary wrote in your native language.

This is a convenient tool for person who listen the NHK radio program, I think.
      http://www.takanashi-it-factory.com/archives/450

On web sites for the NHK radio program, everyone can listen only last weeks lessons.
This windows application automatically capture their sounds and change FLASH data into MP3 files.
This is also convenient for person who study the Chinese, Korean, French, Italian and so on.

Eijiro online, on alc. But then, Eijiro isn’t always right, so I cross use Google Search, to make sure its a real word or phrase used out there in the real world.

      • Naoko McCracken 11:44 pm on December 1, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, I do that too. Google is also useful if you’re not sure about what you’ve written (use quote to search for a set of words).
Toru, if you use Eijiro enough, I recommend installing a desktop app (there are some windows apps too). You’ll save a lot of time & you can be offline.

        • Toru 12:08 am on December 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

there are no free desktop app for windows. I bought the cd-rom version, but it cannot cross search the examples. where as the online version can. So i only use that I am on away, with laptop.
I wonder how can eijiro viewer can be free, as the dictionary file costs some money….

          • Naoko McCracken 12:18 am on December 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I used to use PDIC long time ago – I thought it did search within examples too but I may be wrong. Is REIJIRO registered as well?
Free viewers on Mac is as useful as online search.

            • Toru 1:02 am on December 2, 2009 Permalink

yes, reijiro is registered as well. I think it might cross search, but way the search result show is “incremental search”, so it become useless really.
Does Mac’s free viewer contain the dictionary file? or does it look up on the alc’s server?

            • Naoko McCracken 1:11 am on December 2, 2009 Permalink

Mac viewers don’t include any dictionary file. I downloaded Eijiro file from their web site.

Mac version does incremental search – so I guess I can’t say it’s “as useful as online”.

็ง€ไธธ or others could work (see the sidebar)

              i don’t have hidemaru …
I see, the mac one is just the viewer, and you need to get the dictionary file yourself.
there are iPhone / iPod touch application of eijiro too. do you use any of them? I have bought iPod touch, so I am thinking of downloading that for my next business trip ๐Ÿ™‚

I bought iEijiro on iTMS now. That is iPhone/iPod touch Application.

The new oEmbed feature is already in place on WordPress.com.

If you enter a URL from YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr and some others (Edited: YouTube only for now), the video/image will be expanded. For example:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnQts9NUnL4

    will be expanded as:

(you can write code using [sourcecode] ... [/sourcecode] shortcode.)

You can change the background color (or I can use CSS upgrade to add a custom background image) from P2 admin.

Because we have quite a few members now, I am assigining @masanoryc @miyoshita @odyssey as admins. If you want to be an admin so you can change site settings, please comment here.

I made Tears to write this masthead, and cooked it on photoshop.

I thought I added english, but i didnt come up with that.
What should i add? Eigobu? English Circle and anything like that?

      • Naoko McCracken 12:23 am on November 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I wonder why the site title is hidden. I think the header (or the site title text) should be clickable.
My opinion: the header image looks fine, but should leave
        “Eigobu” (title)
“English Language Group for WordPress Users & Friends” (site description – I updated it on settings page)

You might need to move the writing in the log to the side.
        What do you think?
If you want to use custom CSS, I can set it up too.
